How to post a question to the mailing list

Question:
"How do I post a question to the Genome Browser mailing list?"

Response:
Before posting a question, please search our mailing list archives, our website, and our wiki for the answer. If you are unable to find the answer to your question, Genome Browser mailing list, please feel free to submit your question to genome@soe.ucsc.edu. To expedite technical support, questions and problem reports must adhere to our technical support guidelines. PLoS Computational Biology has published a good set of guidelines for seeking online scientific help. In particular, when sending us a specific browser screenshot, we recommend that you use our Session tool to create a link that fully captures the browser settings. Be sure to removed the "hgsid" parameter and setting from any URL sent to us, as this can cause your personal settings to change unexpectedly.

Unless otherwise noted, questions and comments submitted to the Genome Browser forums are publicly accessible and searchable. Please do not post confidential information to our public forums. If you are unable to find the answer to your question after searching the Genome Browser mailing list, please feel free to submit your question to genome@soe.ucsc.edu. Messages sent to this address will be posted to the moderated genome mailing list, which is also archived on a SEARCHABLE PUBLIC Google Groups forum. You may review this PLoS Comp Bio editorial for a few guidelines before posting questions to the mailing list. When submitting a question, please include the following information:

  • The name of the assembly (e.g. “hg19”, or “human – Feb. 2009”)
  • The name of the track (e.g. “RefSeq Genes”)
  • The exact location you are viewing (e.g. chr7:127,471,196-127,495,720)
And if the problem seems to be one of display, please include:
  • The name and version of the web browser you are using (e.g. Internet Explorer 8)
  • The name and version of your operating system (e.g. Windows 7)
  • The series of items you clicked on to reach the problem

When including a link to a specific view of the browser in your question, please remove the "hgsid" parameter and setting from the URL, as this can cause your personal settings to change unexpectedly. We recommend taking a snapshot of your current browser view with our Session tool and sending a link to that session.
